Brendan Shane

Brendan Shane serves as the Director of Climate for the Trust for Public Land (TPL). In this role he guides TPL’s efforts to use parks and public lands to reduce carbon emissions and protect people and property in a warming world. Prior to coming to TPL, Brendan served as Regional Director for North America at C40, working on climate action and sustainability planning, measurement, and implementation through inter-city, regional, and global collaboration. He has also served as served as Chief of Policy and Sustainability for the District Department of the Environment in Washington, DC, where he worked across District Government and with private sector stakeholders to develop and implement the city’s first comprehensive sustainability plan. He also managed programs including green building and climate change and supported a range of cutting-edge initiatives across energy, waste, and sustainable development. Brendan served as Washington’s C40 coordinator and was an active member of the Urban Sustainability Directors Network, a network of sustainability officials from more than 120 North American cities. Brendan previously served as Environmental Director for the Anacostia Waterfront Corporation, a District-owned redevelopment authority, and practiced energy and environmental law at Van Ness Feldman, LLP.  Brendan is a watershed hydrologist and attorney by training with a bachelors in government from Franklin & Marshall College, masters in geology from the University of Maryland, and law degree from the Georgetown University Law Center.
